Memorable Manitobans: John Jacob Allen (1866-1959)Musician. Born at Manchester, England on 8 November 1866, he was educated in English choir schools and was a solo chorister at Gloucester Cathedral. He came to Winnipeg in 1906. A double bassist, for ten years he was a member of the permanent orchestra at the Royal Alexandra Hotel and performed with such other musicians as Arnold Dann, Arthur Edgerton, Hugh Ross, and Peter Temple. He also played at the Orpheum Theatre and the CBC. He was Secretary of the Musicians Union (1908). He and his wife (?-1957) had four sons and four daughters.
