Memorable Manitobans: Leslie George “Les” Adams (1917-1999)Veteran, volunteer. Born at Winnipeg on 26 April 1917, he joined the Winnipeg Grenadiers in September 1939 and served in Bermuda and Jamaica before departing for Hong Kong in October 1941. He was captured at the Battle of Hong Kong and was a POW for four years, returning in October 1945. He was a lifetime member of the Carman Legion and served as President, as well as being a devoted member of the Carman Kinsmen Club and the Shaughnessy United Church. He also spent many hours canvassing for the Heart and Stroke and Cancer foundations, with his name appearing in Reader’s Digest for his volunteerism. He died at St. Boniface on 15 February 1999.
