Memorable Manitobans: Norman Richard Wilson (1879-1944)

Educator.

Born in Cobourg, Ontario, 31 November 1879, son of Richard and Mary Adelia Wilson, he was educated at the University of Toronto (1899). After a year teaching mathematics at the Royal Military College he came to Wesley College in Winnipeg in 1900 as professor of mathematics. He joined the University of Manitoba in 1914. In 1916 he went overseas with the 196th University Battalion, later switching to the Royal Garrison Artillery. After demobilization he obtained his doctorate from the University of Chicago. With L. A. H. Warren, he wrote Higher Algebra, which for years was a popular university text. He became head of the University of Manitoba mathematics department in 1927, serving until his death in Winnipeg.
