Memorable Manitobans: Frederick James “Fred” Weir (1912-1976)Horticulturalist. Born at Omemee, Ontario in 1912, he was educated at Lindsay Collegiate Institute and the Ontario Agricultural College. He served with the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1941 to 1946, participating in the Second World War as a bomber navigator in Egypt, Malta, and Libya and later as a squadron bombing leader on Sunderland flying boats. In 1949 he became the Manitoba provincial horticulturalist. He wrote hundreds of articles on horticulture and was an active judge at horticultural events. He was made an honorary life member of the Vegetable Growers’ Association of Manitoba (1972). He was a deacon of Oxford United Church and an amateur musician. He died at Kenora, Ontario in 1976.
