Memorable Manitobans: Aquila Walsh (1823-1885)Civil servant. Born at Charlotteville, Ontario on 15 May 1823, he was educated in London District Grammar School and became a civil engineer. He was first elected MLA in 1861. In 1867 he was elected to the Commons. He aspired to the speakership, the first of a number of appointments he hoped to receive for his loyalty to the Conservative Party. Finally, in 1882, he was appointed commissioner of Crown lands for Manitoba and the North-West Territories. He then started to complain about his salary and continued to do so until his accidental death in Winnipeg on 6 March 1885. More information:
