Memorable Manitobans: Norman Alfred Velnes (1924-2024)

Cleric, community activist.

Born on 1 June 1942, he grew up on a cattle farm near Bremner, Alberta. After receiving BA and Master of Divinity degrees from United College, in 1973 he was ordained as a minister in the United Church of Canada. He served in the Birtle-Miniota area before working in a team ministry at St. Vital United Church. He spent 12 years in fund development in Manitoba and northwestern Ontario and was President of the Manitoba Division of the MS Society of Canada.

He had two sons and two daughters. In 2005, he married Margaret Livingstone. He was a member of the St. Vital United Church and helped to plan the United Church in Meadowood. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Winnipeg, serving as President and Governor of the Western Canada District of Kiwanis International (2003-2004). He was a member of the Board for Kiwanis Chateau and was President of the Kiwanis International Children's Fund (2020). He served on the Board of the Boys and Girls Club of Winnipeg and was President of the Winnipeg Chapter of the Canadian Association of Gift Planners. He chaired the Deer Lodge Centre Foundation.

In recognition of his community service, he received a Walter Zeller Fellowship Award and a Mel Osborne Award and other awards from the Kiwanis Club.

He died at the Grace Hospital on 22 November 2024.
