Memorable Manitobans: Alfred “Bert” Veale (1887-1960)

Mailman, municipal official.

Born at Chipping Camden, Gloucestershire, England on 24 May 1887, he moved to Brandon where he was working as a mailman when, in 1916, he enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force and served overseas with the 181st Battalion. On 7 June 1913, he married Ethel Thorley (1891-1969) at Brandon and they had two daughters: Ethel May Veale (1914-?) and Mamie Ellen Veale (1916-?). He was member of St. George's Anglican Church, Sons of England (Grand President), and Brandon Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion (President). He served on the Brandon city council for eight years (1948-1956).

He died at Brandon on 25 June 1960 and was buried in the Brandon Cemetery.
