Memorable Manitobans: John Daniel “Jack” Ulrich (1890-1927)

Hockey player.

Born at Kursk, Russia in 1890, he and his family moved to Manitoba in the early 20th century. He learned to play hockey with the Silents team of the Manitoba School for the Deaf. In 1912, he became the first deaf player to play professional hockey, serving with the Vancouver Millionaires, Victoria Senators, and Victoria Aristocrats. Moving east, he played with the Montreal Wanderers and Toronto Blueshirts. He retired from hockey in 1916 due to injuries. He died at Detroit, Michigan in November 1927, where he had been working as a cabinet maker.
