Memorable Manitobans: Glenora Pearce Slimmon (1925-2018)

Community activist.

Born at Tisdale, Saskatchewan on 24 May 1925, daughter of Margret Helen Mann and James Arthur Pearce, she attended the Tisdale High School and graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in 1947. After dietetic training at the University of Alberta Hospital, she became Women's Editor of The Country Guide, was “Donna Rochdale” for Federated Co-ops Limited, President of the Consumers Association of Canada, and a consumer commentator for CKX Television and CBC Radio.

In 1970, she and her husband moved to Barbados to assist with development of co-operatives there under the sponsorship of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). From 1974 to 1977, they helped to establish farm production and marketing groups in Barbados with the Canadian University Services Overseas (CUSO). They returned to Brandon in 1977. In recognition of her community service, she was inducted into the Order of Manitoba (2005).

She died at Brandon on 8 November 2018.
