Memorable Manitobans: Short Bear [Ogemah Keeshkeemaquah] (1859-1916)

Indigenous leader.

Born in 1859, grandson of Black Robe, he became hereditary Chief of the Long Plain people at the age of 13. Consider too young at this point, leadership was assigned until he assumed the role with the amendment of Treaty 1 on 20 June 1876. He died in 1916 and was buried in Long Plain land. In 2004, a monument was dedicated in his memorya on the Keeshkeemaquah Reserve in Portage la Prairie.
