Memorable Manitobans: Stella Sawchyn (1920-2008)

Born in Poland on 23 November 1920, she immigrated to Canada in 1929 with her parents and siblings. In 1945, while working for Mary Maxim Limited, the largest mail-order company for needlework and craft kits in North America, she designed their first sweater pattern, the reindeer. Knitting kits based on her designs were available over 50 years later. She died at Beausejour on 27 February 2008.
