Memorable Manitobans: James Charles Preece (1903-1953)Accountant, municipal official. Born at Minnedosa on 3 February 1903, son of Thomas William Preece and Mary Jane Threadkill, he moved with his family to Portage la Prairie in 1904. He was working as an accountant with the Canadian National Railway at the time of his death. On 23 August 1930, he married Eva Florence Moran (?-2003) at Portage la Prairie and they had two daughters. He was a councilor (six years) and Mayor (1945-1947) of Portage la Prairie, a first aid instructor for St. John's Ambulance Society, President of the Portage Tennis Association, and a member of the Portage Horticultural Society, Elks, and Moose. He died at Portage la Prairie on 24 September 1953 and was buried in the Portage Hillside Cemetery.
