Memorable Manitobans: Colin Hargreaves Pearson (1899-1980)

Lawyer, judge.

Born at Minnedosa on 28 July 1899, son of Ernest William Pearson and Jessie Borland (1865-1948), at the age of 7 he was sent to England for his education. He stayed there and was called to the English Bar in 1924. He practiced law in London, becoming a junior counsel in the Ministry of Works in 1930. After service in the Treasury Solicitor’s office during the Second World War, he was appointed a judge in the King’s Bench Division of the High Court in 1951 and later a Lord of Appeal. He chaired inquiries and Royal Commissions in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. He was made a life peer with the title Baron Pearson of Minnedosa in 1965. He died at London, England on 31 January 1980.
