Memorable Manitobans: John Franklin Orr (1870-1942)

Businessman, municipal official.

Born at Hastings, Ontario on 6 September 1870, he spent several years at Kenora (Ontario) before moving to Grandview in 1901 where he operated a real estate business, theatre, and garage. From 1911 to his death, he was a local dealer for the Ford Motor Company, holding a record in North America for the most number of years as a dealer. He married Annie Hoban (1870-1942) at Kenora and they had three children: Viola Ann Orr (1894-?, wife of Roy Fisher Steele), Margaret Ellen Orr (1898-?, wife of George Edmund Buchanan), and Franklin Hoban Orr (1901-1964). He was the first Mayor of Grandview, serving from 1906 to 1913, and again from 1914 to 1915. He was also Chair of the Grandview School Board and was a Police Magistrate at Grandview (1915-?). He died at Dauphin on 21 October 1942, due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was buried with his wife in the Beausejour Cemetery.
