Memorable Manitobans: Edward John “Ed” Martens (1941-2015)

Community activist.

Born on 8 June 1941, son of Abram and Agatha Martens, he worked for Investor’s Syndicate and Manitoba Association of School Trustees before founding his own public relations firm. He served as a school trustee for six years and was President of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce (1985-1986), Vice Chair of the St. Boniface Hospital Research Foundation, a member of the Board at St. Amant Centre, Vice Chair of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra Board, Chair of the Red River College Board of Governors, and Chair of the Winnipeg Business Development Corporation. He was a Progressive Conservative candidate for the Rossmere constituency in a September 1993 provincial by-election. His hobbies included running, travel, gardening, golfing, and music. He died at the Concordia Hospital on 16 September 2015.
