Memorable Manitobans: Francis McDonald “Mac” Manwaring (1915-1997)

Lawyer, civil servant, judge.

Born at Brownlee, Saskatchewan on 13 January 1915, son of Francis Henry Manwaring and Mary Blanche McDonald (?-?), his childhood was spent at Birtle. After serving in the Canadian military during the Second World War, he attended St. John's College and the Manitoba Law School. He practiced law in Hamiota (1950-1955) then joined the federal department of finance to administer the Farm Improvement Loans Act.

In September 1960, he was appointed Sheriff and Police Magistrate for the Eastern Judicial District, succeeding Clarence Coates Sparling. He also served as Bailiff for the County Court of Winnipeg, a judge of the Winnipeg Juvenile Court, and inspector of legal offices. He became High Sherrif for the Province of Manitoba (1965) and Provincial Court Judge (1973-1980). He was a part-time judge (1984-1988) and Master and Referee for the Court of Queen's Bench. He moved to Dauphin in 1968.

He was married twice, first on 23 March 1940 to Margaret Evelyn Dunn (?-1976) at Birtle and they had a daughter and a son. His second wife was Mildred.

He died at Portage la Prairie on 11 November 1997.
