Hugh Archibald MacLean

Lawyer, civil servant.
Born at Woodstock, New Brunswick on 6 December 1857, son of Hugh and Mahala Anne Yerxa, he was educated at Ottawa College and was admitted to the Ontario Bar. He came to Manitoba, was called to the Manitoba Bar, and served as Deputy Attorney General (1883-1898). He moved to British Columbia and was Deputy Attorney General there (1898-1910) and was made a King’s Counsel. He practiced law into his 80s.
On 6 October 1902, he married Charlotte Grace Barrett (1878-1953) at Victoria, British Columbia and they had two sons, including Hugh Allan MacLean (1903-1983) who also served as a Deputy Attorney General in British Columbia. He died at Victoria, British Columbia on 31 March 1949 as Canada’s oldest King’s Counsel.
