Memorable Manitobans: Douglas Cunningham “Doug” Lawson (1916-2014)

Businessman.

Born at Hayfield on 22 November 1916, son of Frank Hill Lawson (1889-1964) and Cora Ethel Cunningham (1890-1982), in 1934 he joined his father and brothers in the Brandon agricultural implements business of Frank Lawson and Sons. Located originally on Pacific Avenue, it was moved to the corner of Ninth Street and McTavish Avenue in the early 1940s. After retirement in 1976, he retained an interest in Westman Tire until 1995.

He was active with the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba for over 40 years and served as its President (1967-1969). He chaired the committee that advocated for construction of the Keystone Centre and was the first President of its Board (1971-1972). He was married twice, first on 3 June 1939 to Margaret Norton Mann (1918-?, daughter of W. N. Mann) at Brandon. They had two sons and two daughters before divorcing in August 1952. He later married Wilma G. Juckes (1931-2019).

He died at Brandon on 30 January 2014 and was buried in the Brandon Cemetery.
