Memorable Manitobans: Floyd David Lacroix (1937-2010)

Mechanic, fiddler.

Born at Portage la Prairie on 27 November 1937 to Rose Eva Fleury (1913-1990) and Floyd Louis Lacroix (1914-1996), he was raised and spent most of his early years at Poplar Point. There he worked at the family service station, Poplar Point Garage, and also at the family farm. He followed in his father's footsteps learning his trade as a mechanic. Then from 1965 until the end of 1982, he was employed at Smith Motors at Portage la Prairie, which later became Prairie Ford. In 1983 he returned to Poplar Point to re-open Poplar Point Garage, where he stayed until his retirement.

He also followed in his father’s footsteps as a renowned fiddler, performing at many musical events throughout his life. During his retirement years, he devoted his time to entertaining with his many musician friends. Music was always an important part of his life, and in 2011 his name was added posthumously to the Manitoba Fiddle Association Wall of Fame. Deeply interested in history, both local and global, he spent a great deal of time reading books on the topic. He was proud to serve on the committee that, in 2007, published a community history book about Poplar Point/St. Marks, called It’s About Time.

With his wife Maxine Pearl Moyse (1932-2010), whom he married in 1981, he had a son and a stepson.

He died at Portage la Prairie on 20 February 2010.
