Memorable Manitobans: Jane Stuart Kines (c1935-2003)

Nurse, midwife, journalist.

She trained as a State Registered Nurse at the Middlesex Hospital in London, England then founded the Kirathimo Family Life Training Centre in Kenya and served as a district health nurse at Nairobi, Kenya and with East African Flying Doctors (EAMR). She also founded Kirathimo International, a primary health care provider for 25 rural villages in Belize. Coming to Manitoba, she founded the Kenya Public Relations Society, Westman Media Cooperative at Brandon, and edited publications for the World Media Institute. She was an Anglican lay reader, student of religion, devoted gardener, photographer, and seamstress. She died in an automobile accident at Prescott, Ontario on 29 January 2003.
