Memorable Manitobans: Ernest Joseph “Doc” Kelly (1891-1954)

Dentist.

Born at Richmond, Quebec in 1891, he moved to Brandon in 1900. He studied dentistry at Northwestern University (Chicago, Illinois) and, during the First World War, enlisted in the Canadian Army Dental Corps at Brandon, in 1915. He served witih the 92nd Battalion, 14th Field Ambulance, No. 2 Canadian General Hospital, No. 1 Casualty Clearance Centre and, at one time, was acting assistant director of dental services at army headquarters in London. After his military discharge in 1919, he returned to Manitoba. In 1928, he arrived by barge at Flin Flon, before the arrival of a railway, and established a dental practice. He practiced until blindness caused his retirement in 1947. In 1929, he founded the Flin Flon branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. He died at his home in Flin Flon on 26 June 1954.
