Memorable Manitobans: Horace Ashley Ireland (1885-1968)

Railwayman, municipal official.

Born in England on 4 October 1885, son of Ashley E. Ireland (1852-1933), he came to Portage la Prairie with his parents and attended local schools. He worked for the Canadian National Railway from youth until retirement in 1950.

On 9 April 1917, he married Ella Irene Thomson (1891-1969) of Portage la Prairie and they had three children: Charles Edward Ireland (1918-?), Edith Irene Ireland (1920-?, wife of J. Lewis), and Janet Madeline Ireland (1921-?, wife of G. M. Halloworth). The family lived at Rivers until 1926 when they returned to Portage la Prairie. Active in community life, he served as Mayor of Portage la Prairie (1937-1943), President of the Portage Boy Scouts Association, President of the Portage Credit Union, Secretary of the Portage Parks Board, and Secretary-Treasurer of the Portage and District Chamber of Commerce.

He died at Portage la Prairie on 16 May 1968 and was buried in the Portage Hillside Cemetery. He is commemorated by Ireland Crescent in Portage la Prairie.
