Memorable Manitobans: Ronald Michael “Roman/Ron” Hladun (1927-2016)

Educator.

Born at the family farmstead near Mikado, Saskatchewan on 20 August 1927, son of George Hladun and Anne Hladun, he attended school at Pretty Valley High School, at Moose Jaw, and the Saskatoon Teachers College during the summers of 1947 through 1949. In later years, he graduated with a BA degree (1976) from the University of Winnipeg.

He taught for eight years in rural Saskatchewan, including near Canora and Kamsack, and in the Smerenie School District No. 4584 (1947-1948) and Zukunft School District No. 4378 (1948-1956). In 1956, he came to Manitoba and settled at Winnipeg Beach, teaching in the region (1956-1962), serving as Principal of Winnipeg Beach School / Winnipeg Beach Elementary (1962-1986). He retired from teaching around 1988.

In 1969, he married Geraldine Marion “Gerry” Hradowy (1931-1998, widow of John Biy), and adopted her four children. They had two more children and lived at Netley. He died at the Red River Nursing Home in Selkirk on 30 July 2016 and was buried in the Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery.
