Memorable Manitobans: Geraldine Muriel Murphy Hanks (1895-1981)

Newspaper executive.

Born at Brockville, Ontario on 19 August 1895, daughter of Alice Elizabeth Singleton (1867-1965) and Lewis Edwin Murphy, she moved with her family to Winnipeg in 1913. On 19 May 1923, she married Alfred William “Bill” Hanks at the Parkview Methodist Church (St. James United Church). The couple had two children: Warren Edwin Alfred Hanks (1930-2006) and Alice Winnifred Hanks (wife of George Robert Johnston). She served as President of the Canadian Weekly Newspapers Association. She died at Winnipeg on 2 October 1981.
