Football player, coach.
Born at Superior, Wisconsin on 20 May 1927, he was given the nickname “Bud” by his mother. After a stint in the American military during the Second World War, he played football, basketball, and baseball at the University of Minnesota. He played professional basketball for two seasons with the Minneapolis Lakers and professional football with the Philadelphia Eagles.
After playing with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (1952-?), he turned to coaching. He was coach of the Bombers (1957-1966) during which time the team won four Grey Cup championships (1958, 1959, 1961, 1962). He subsequently coached the Minnesota Vikings from 1967 to 1985, taking them to four Super Bowls. He was inducted into the Manitoba Order of the Buffalo Hunt (1957, 2007), Blue Bombers Hall of Fame (1984) and Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame (1984).
He died at Bloomington, Minnesota on 11 March 2023.
