Memorable Manitobans: Elwood Clinton Gorrie (1915-2002)

Business administrator, municipal official, Brandon Mayor (1974-1977).

Born at Wawanesa on 27 November 1915, son of Charles Gorrie and Evelyn Thornber (1890-1974), he attended Wawanesa School and moved to Brandon in 1939 where he worked for Canadian Motors before joining Anglo Canadian Oils Limited. He became its Vice-President in 1954 and holding several positions after a merger with Gulf Canada. He retired in 1979.

On 26 June 1941, he married Treva Alma McKellar at Wawanesa and they and a daughter and a son. He served as the Chair of the Brandon School Board (1959-1960), Councillor (1972-?) and Mayor (1974-1977) of Brandon, and President of the Manitoba Association of Urban Municipalities (1976-1977). He was a member of Central United Church.

He died at Brandon on 3 July 2002 and was buried in the Brandon Cemetery.
