Memorable Manitobans: William Gibbens (1854-1932)

Journalist.

Born at London, England on 7 July 1854, he came to Canada in 1869 and became the first local reporter of the Brockville Evening Recorder, in 1873. Later, he was city editor of the Ottawa Citizen, worked at the Rapid City Standard and was founding publisher of the Minnedosa Tribune (1883-1884). He returned to Ontario in 1884 and was managing editor of the Ottawa Citizen for four years then was editor and publisher of the Cornwall Standard until his death, which occurred on 20 February 1932.
