Memorable Manitobans: Gladys Mary Bartlett Garrioch (1902-1987)

Dance instructor.

Born in England on 24 February 1902, she operated a dancing school at Portage la Prairie for 49 years, interrupted only by three years of service (1942-1945) in the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War, at Halifax (Nova Scotia) and Moncton (New Brunswick). On 24 November 1920, she married Aldous Vernon Garrioch (1898-1977, son of A. C. Garrioch) at Portage la Prairie. In 1970, she was awarded an MHS Centennial Medal “for giving 50 years of devoted public service to the children of Portage la Prairie”. She died at Portage la Prairie on 16 June 1987.
