Memorable Manitobans: Mitchell Fraser “Mitch” Davidson (1957-2025)

Sports referee.

Born on 22 March 1957, his early childhood was spent in Fort Rouge before his family moved to Transcona in 1965. He excelled at many sports, especially volleyball, where he served as an international referee.

In 1992, he attended an International Referee Clinic in Sofia, Bulgaria and after completing all the required training and matches, earned his International Badge in 1994. Over the years, he was assigned to numerous national and international competitions including four World Military Volleyball Championships (Italy, USA, Romania, and Canada). The culmination of his experience and reputation as an International Referee resulted in being chosen by the FIVB to officiate at the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008, and again at the 2012 Olympics in London. In 2023, he was inducted into the Volleyball Manitoba Hall of Fame.

He died on 31 January 2025, survived by his wife and son.
