Educator, community activist.
Born at Cheylard l'Eveque, Lozere, France on 30 July 1885, after teaching for a year in Paris, he came to Canada in 1905. He taught school in Montreal, Quebec (1905-1910) and one year in Quebec City. He came to western Canada in 1912 and settled at St. Boniface where he taught at Provencher School from 1912 until retirement in 1950. During the First World War, he served with French forces and was made a prisoner of war at Verdun in 1916. Liberated 18 months later, he spent the last year of the war on the Balkan front.
He was one of the first members of La Fanfare La Verendrye, a member of the St. Boniface Basilica Choir (35 years), secretary of Le Cercle Moliere, Executive Member of L'association d'education des Canadiens-Francais du Manitoba (10 years), President of L'Union Nationale Francaise, and a member of L'Alliance Francaise. At the time of his death, he was secretary and organist at the Belgian Sacred Heart Church.
He and wife Eugenie (?-1951) had one son, Joseph Chabalier.
He died at the St. Boniface Hospital on 26 December 1964 and was buried in the St. Boniface Cemetery.
