Farmer, community activist.
Born at Portage la Prairie on 29 August 1919 to Mary Ethel Wishart (1880-1975) and Albert Victor McClure “Mac” Brownridge (1880-1974), he farmed all his life at the family farm north of Portage la Prairie, first with his father and then with his brother Irvine. The family also raised Clydesdale horses and showed them at many fairs across Manitoba and at the Toronto Royal Winter Fair. He was involved in competitive ploughing and represented Manitoba at the Canadian Ploughing Competitions three times.
He loved sports and volunteered with, participated in, and watched a variety of sports, especially curling and golf. In 1965 he became the manager of the Portage Curling Club and remained in that position until 1986. For several years he was Assistant Drawmaster at the Winnipeg Bonspiel, which involved more than 450 teams, with the schedules and results at that time tabulated manually. He attended many Brier and World Curling Championships. His team won the club championship six times, the senior zone seven times, and represented Manitoba at the Canadian Senior Curling Championships twice. He was a founder of the Cash Spiel at Portage.
In the game of golf, he played in hundreds of tournaments around Manitoba and was instrumental in starting the Senior Golf Tournament and the Six Pack at the Portage Golf Club. His dedication to curling and golf has been recognized through Life Memberships in the Manitoba Curling Association, Portage Curling Club, and Portage Golf Club, honouring his countless hours volunteering at tournaments and championships, and helping with construction and manual labour at both the curling and golf clubs. He also enjoyed camping and travelling across Canada, the United States, and the British Isles and spending the winters in Florida.
With his first wife, Dora McDonald (1919-2008), he had one child. After divorce, he married Roberta Jean Lockhart (1933-2011) in 1973.
He died at Portage la Prairie on 30 October 2007.
