Memorable Manitobans: Gertrude Bernard [Anahareo] (1906-1987)Animal rights activist. Born at Mattawa, Ontario in 1906, she married Archibald Belaney (Grey Owl) and helped convert him to environmentalism while the couple were living in Riding Mountain National Park in the early 1930s. She remained involved in animal rights after the couple divorced in 1936. She wrote an autobiography, Devil in Deerskins: My Life with Grey Owl (1972), reissued in 2014. See also:
