Memorable Manitobans: Lyle Bauer (1958-2024)

Football player, administrator.

Born at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on 22 August 1958, he attended Weber State University in Utah on an athletic scholarship. Recruited to the Canadian Football League’s Saskatchewan Roughriders in 1975, he later played with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (1982-1991), winning Grey Cups in 1984, 1988, and 1990. He returned to the Blue Bombers as Assistant General Manager (1992-1995) then moved to Calgary, Alberta as General Manager of AgPro Grain. He came back to Winnipeg as General Manager (2000-2003) and President and CEO (2000-2009) of the Blue Bombers after which he held an executive position with the Calgary Stampeders (2009-2013). He was inducted into the Blue Bombers Hall of Fame (1998). In retirement, he founded the Never Alone Cancer Foundation. He died at Kelowna, British Columbia on 26 April 2024.
