Memorable Manitobans: William Jack Barclay (1870-1955)Publisher, printer. Born at Ayreshire, Scotland on 10 November 1870, son of James Barclay and Jean Naismith, his family came to Canada in 1883 and, ten years later, he arrived in Souris, bought a part interest in the Souris Plaindealer newspaper, and was its sole proprietor from 1897 to 1912. On 27 October 1897, he married Esther Isabella Saunderson (1875-1916, daughter of William C. Saunderson) at Souris and they had three children at Souris: William Saunderson Barclay (1899-?), Hugh Naismith Barclay (1901-1971), and Sadie Esther Isabella Barclay (1911-?). The family moved to British Columbia in 1913 where he worked as a printer until 1946. He died at North Vancouver on 11 March 1955. See also:
