On 1 April 1959, an order of the Manitoba Minister of Education, acting on a recommendation of the MacFarlane Commission on Education and the School Divisions Boundaries Commission, was to create the Boundary School Division. A public plebiscite held to approve the action was rejected by local electors. A second plebiscite held a few years later was also rejected. When the six-classroom Dominion City high school was condemned in December 1965, the creation of a school division was finally approved and it began operations for the 1966-1967 school year.
Boundary was later amalgamated with Red River School Division No. 17, Rhineland School Division No. 18, and Sprague Consolidated School District No. 2439 to form the Border Land School Division.
