Memorable Manitobans: Marshall Clayton Effler (1932-2023)

Educator, administrator.

Born at Grandview on 21 March 1932, son of Herman Effler (1898-1978) and Sarah Elisabeth “Sadie” Harvey (1899-1988), he taught at Swan River School (1954-1955) and was the Principal of Connor School (1955-1958), Gladstone School (1959-1960), and William Morton Collegiate (1960-1961). He then moved to Lethbridge, Alberta before returning to Manitoba as Supervisor of Schools for the Frontier School Division, based at Winnipeg.

He and his family were associated with the National Science Foundation Summer Institutes at Arizona State University. He was registered in Mathematics in secondary schools in March 1966 and they spent the summer of 1966 there. He received a Masters of Natural Science degree (1967-1968) at the University of Arizona in Tempe. In 1976, he became Director of Education for the Borderland School Division at Rockglen, Saskatchewan. He finished his career as Director of Education for the Potashville School Division at Esterhazy, Saskatchewan, retiring in 1990.

He married Norma Rhind (daughter of William Charles Rhind) and they had three sons and a daughter. He moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 1992 and died there on 9 July 2023. He was buried in the Westbourne Cemetery.
