The site for Montcalm School, measuring 165 feet along Bannatyne Avenue, 264 feet on William Avenue, and 331 feet on Tecumseh Street, was acquired by the Winnipeg School Board in April 1920 for $20,000. The building was designed by local architect John Nelson Semmens and constructed in 1920 by day labourers supervised by the Sutherland Construction Company. The one-storey, eight-classroom building cost $80,000 and was planned to accommodate students in grades 1 to 6, after which they would transfer to Maple Leaf Junior High School. In December 1920, it was named for General Montcalm, the commander of French forces in Quebec at the time of the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, as a balance to General Wolfe School commemorating the general of British forces. By 1922, its enrollment was about 350 students.

The school closed in June 1975 after which the building was used as a day care centre. It became the home of the Manitoba Adolescent Treatment Centre in October 1984.
