Memorable Manitobans: Robert James “Bob” Harris (1934-2019)

Educator, cleric.

Born at Virden on 8 February 1934, son of Arthur Harris and Dorothy Harris, he attended grade school at Brandon and graduated from Brandon College (BA 1957), McMaster University (Divinity School), and the University of Manitoba with BPed (1959), BEd (1962), and MEd (1976) degrees. In 1957, he married Beverley Tolton and they had three sons.

From Brandon, the family moved to Souris where he taught at Souris High School (1957-1959) after which he was Principal of Wawanesa School (1959-1964). In 1964, he moved to suburban Winnipeg and settled in North Kildonan where he continued teaching in the River East School Division, including as a guidance counsellor at River East Collegiate (?-?), Vice-Principal of Morse Place Junior High School (1968-1970), and Principal of Maple Leaf School (1971-1975) and Emerson Elementary School (1979-1984). He retired in June 1989.

He also served as Pastor of several churches in Manitoba, including 25 years divided between Tabernacle Baptist Church (?-?) and Pilgrim Baptist Church (?-?) in Winnipeg. He had also served as a supply/circuit preacher at Little Souris United Church (1950s), Beresford United Church (1950s), and Brandon Hills United Church (1950s) during his time at Brandon, and Elgin United Church (1961-1962), Minto United Church (?-?), and Regent United Church (?-?) during his time at Souris and Wawanesa. He was a member of the East Kildonan Kiwanis Club and Winnipeg Philatelic Society.

He died at Winnipeg on 31 January 2019.
