Memorable Manitobans: Joseph Francis “Joe” Scott (1940-2024)

Educator.

Born on 6 May 1940, son of John Thomas Scott (1902-1965) and Ida Mary Neff (1911-2008), he grew up in St. Boniface, save for a few years the family resided in the North End of Winnipeg. After initially failing grade 12, he relocated to Swan Lake and resided with the DePape family while he completed grade 12 at Mariapolis Collegiate, after which he returned to Winnipeg and attained BA (1969), BEd (1971), and MEd (1979) degrees from the University of Manitoba.

His career in education spanned over 40 years in the Winnipeg School Division as a teacher at Queenston School (1964-1969, where he earned Teacher of the Year Award), and was Principal of Sir John Franklin School (1973-1976), Robert H. Smith School (1976-1980), Weston School (1980-1988), Isaac Brock School (1989-1992), and River Heights Junior High School (1992-1998).

He was President of the Winnipeg Teachers’ Association (1988-1989), an Executive of the Holy Cross Credit Union (later Heritage Credit Union, still later Cambrian Credit Union), volunteered with Worldwide Marriage Encounters, and was a member of the Dubuc Social Club. On 8 August 1964, he married Patricia Evelyn “Pat” Broeska at Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church and together they had three children.

He died at the Riverview Health Centre in Winnipeg on 20 July 2024.
