Memorable Manitobans: Mary Charlotte Pinn McLachlan (1907-1984)

Educator.

Born at Dauphin on 4 June 1907, eldest daughter of Lilian Minnie Collins (1876-1955) and William John Pinn, she grew up at Gladstone and attended both Gladstone School and teacher training. She taught during the 1920s and 1930s, including at Excelsior School (1926-1927), Elam School (?-?), Bear Creek School (?-?, 1920s), North Star School (1930-1931), and Tobacco Creek School (1937-1938). In the 1950s, she returned to the classroom at Maple School (1954-1955), Chapman School (1955-1956), Royal School (1956-1957), Bethany School (1957-1958), Loudoun School (1958-1959, Principal), and St. Charles School (1959-1967).

On 13 July 1938, she married James Edward McLachlan (1897-1954) at Gladstone United Church and they subsequently had three children: James McLachlan, Reta/Rita McLachlan, and Sandra McLachlan (wife of Gary Dunn). Upon returning from honeymoon at Devil's Lake, North Dakota, they took up residence in the Morris area. She was a member of the Charleswood United Church for 29 years.

She died at the Tuxedo Villa Nursing Home in Winnipeg on 2 October 1984 and was buried in the Morris Cemetery.
