Memorable Manitobans: Orest William “Bill” Lewycky (1926-2012)

Businessman, farmer, municipal official.

Born at Rossdale on 11 April 1926 to Mary Mazur (1903-1992) and Karylo Lewycky (1892-1987), he worked on the family farm during the Depression years, then moved to Winnipeg to attend high school and study briefly at the University of Manitoba. Living in the city's North End, he was involved in church and youth organizations (Sobor parish) while working as a milkman and as manager of a Jewel grocery store. In 1947, he married Mary Eva Yuzyk (1916-2003), and they went on to have two sons.

In 1950, he and his family moved to Shoal Lake where he became an active business and community leader in the Westman area. He was successful in local retail businesses and farming, and contributed to community development for over 40 years. His businesses included the Red and White shopping centre, Kady-Lo Farm Service, and the Bumper to Bumper hardware store. Meanwhile, he owned and operated farms in the Shoal Lake and Olha areas, where he demonstrated some of the newest farming techniques and equipment.

He served as Trustee and Chair of the Birdtail River School Division (1969-1978) and was Mayor of Shoal Lake (1980-1989). He was a Life Member of the Union of Manitoba Municipalities, a Regional Director of the Manitoba Chamber of Commerce (1958-1960), and President of the Liberal Party Riding Association.

In 1993, after retirement, he and his wife moved back to Winnipeg. There he enjoyed church, community work, travel, and family. He served on the board of St. Andrew’s College (2001 to 2005) and was a Member of the Ukrainian Professional and Business Club of Winnipeg and of the Sons of Ukrainian Pioneers (SOUP). He was also a Royal Arch Mason and member of Khartum Shrine Temple Provost Corps. He was known for his energy and enthusiasm, and for his commitment and generosity to his community.

He died at Winnipeg on 1 August 2012 and was buried in the Glen Eden Memorial Gardens.
