Memorable Manitobans: Harriet Maud Perry Lederman (1914-2001)

Educator.

Born at Winnipeg on 12 August 1914, daughter of Lavinia Bell Riley (1880-1920, daughter of Robert Thomas Riley) and Edmund Guthrie Perry, in 1940 she received a medical degree from the University of Manitoba. She married physician John McDonald “Jack” Lederman (1912-1962) and they had two sons and a daughter. She enrolled her daughter at Balmoral Hall and became active on school committees. She became Headmistress (1965-1973) after which she returned to the University of Manitoba to study English and Film. She also served on the Board of Governors of the Winnipeg Art Gallery, St. Vital Library, and Winnipeg Public Library. She died at Vernon, British Columbia on 20 June 2001.
