Memorable Manitobans: Mohamed Ikramulla “Ike” Hussain (1937-2012)

Physician and surgeon, community activist.

Born at Bangalore, India in 1937, he was a bright and energetic child, and chose his vocation as a surgeon early in life. He graduated from the Kasturba Medical School, taking internships first in Bangalore, and then Binghamton, New York. He went on to a surgical residency in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he impressed his colleagues with his talents, both in the operating theatre and at the doctors’ lounge ping pong table.

In 1969, he married a colleague, Maralyn Joan Mackay, and moved to Winnipeg to complete his surgical training at the University of Manitoba. In 1970, he began his surgical practice in Selkirk, where he continued to serve until his retirement in 2010. In those 40 years, he worked in Selkirk, Beausejour, and the surrounding communities, and was recognized for his qualities as a leader, a mentor, and a dedicated doctor.

He served as President of the Selkirk Medical Centre for 30 years and was active in the Manitoba College of Physicians and Surgeons, including terms as Chair of the Area Standards Committee, the Complaints Committee, and the Standards Committee. He served a term on the Manitoba Research Council, and also spent time as a member of the Boards of Balmoral Hall and the Professional Financial Credit Union. A project especially important to him was working to establish the Selkirk and District Community Foundation, of which he is named a co-founder.

Outside of his career in medicine and his volunteer work, he was a prodigious reader, an amateur photographer, and had an appreciation for art, amassing a large collection of English pottery. He possessed a natural aptitude for games and sports, and with his two children and extended family and friends enjoyed skiing, swimming, windsurfing, frisbee, and ping pong.

He died at Selkirk on 9 July 2012 and was buried in the Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens.
