This hospital on Third Avenue East at Ste. Rose du Lac was designed by the Winnipeg architectural firm of Green Blankstein Russell and Ham and constructed between 1938 and 1939 by the construction firm of Couture and Toupin. The building was opened officially on 7 February 1939 at a ceremony attended by Archbishop Alfred Arthur Sinnott, Minister of Health and Public Welfare Isaac Bertie Griffiths, House Speaker Robert Hawkins, MLA Sauveur Marcoux, MLA Maurice Dane MacCarthy, and Ste. Rose Reeve Oscar Archambault. The facility was administered by the Grey Nuns.
By the mid-1950s, the building no longer met modern fire codes, lacked space for needed services, and had too few beds. In August 1955, the provincial government approved a new building and, in July 1957, a new building constructed by Peter Letch Construction was opened. The original hospital was renovated as a residence and support services area.
