Memorable Manitobans: Peter Zvankin (1879-1975)

Composer.

Born at Kherson, Russia on 15 August 1879, he played clarinet in the Russian Army Orchestra before coming to Winnipeg in 1906. He worked at a variety of jobs then became a textile broker. At the age of 55, he began composing music for voice, strings, and piano. His music was performed frequently by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and the Winnipeg CBC Orchestra.

On 14 April 1915, he married Luba Markovitch (c1883-1936) and they had two children: Isaac Moses Zvankin (1916-1995) and Sylvia Zvankin (1918-1999). He was a member of the Rosh Pina Synagogue, Bnai Brith, Jewish Historical Society, Manitoba Historical Society, Canadian Technion Society, and Authors and Publishers Association of Canada.

He died at Winnipeg on 25 August 1975 and was buried in the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery. His papers are at the University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections and the Archives of Manitoba.
