Memorable Manitobans: Samuel Herbert Williams (1890-1964)

Veteran, author.

Born at Binscarth on 6 May 1890, son of Elizabeth Williams, he moved to Winnipeg with his family in 1908. The following year, he joined the T. Eaton Company and worked as a buyer there for 43 years except during military service. During the First World War, he served with the Lord Strathcona Horse and demobilized with the rank of Major. During the Second World War, he served with the Veterans Guard Reserve (1940-1945). Ill health prompted him to retire in 1952.

He and wife Elizabeth Lillian Williams (1894-1989) had two children: Rev. Ross Williams and Joan Williams (wife of D. C. Irwin). He was an active member of the St. Andrews River Heights United Church and the Masons (Prince Rupert Lodge), Canukeena Club, and Outlook Club. In retirement he wrote Stand to Your Horses: Through the First World War 1914-1918 with the Lord Strathcona's Horse (1961).

He died at the Deer Lodge Hospital on 14 October 1964 and was buried in the Elmwood Cemetery.
