Francis Thomas Gilham White

Civil servant, horticulturist.
Born at Selkirk, Scotland on 18 December 1884, he came to Canada in 1907. He began working with the Winnipeg Parks Board and served as a foreman (1918-1925) and later supervisor at Assiniboine Park. In 1935, he succeeded George Champion as Superintendent of the Board and served until retirement in 1950. He was replaced by Thomas Rupert “Tom” Hodgson.
On 21 October 1910, he married Alice Robina Carruthers (?-1962) at Winnipeg and they subsequently had one son, David George White (1912-2005). The family lived at 65 Sherburn Street. He was a member of the Masons (Sturgeon Creek Lodge) and St. Stephen-Broadway United Church.
He died at Winnipeg on 18 March 1972 and was buried in the Brookside Cemetery.
