Memorable Manitobans: Dominga Gamboa Urrutia (1916-2004)

Community activist.

Born at Pampanga, Philippines on 12 May 1916, she married Eustaquio Urrutia (1912-2008) in 1934 and they had eleven children. In January 1977, she and her husband immigrated to Canada. Settling at Winnipeg, they immediately identified a need in the Filipino community and became the co-founders of the Original Filipino Seniors Association of Manitoba (OFSAM). She was an active member of the Filipino community and its programs at Folklorama. Dancing and singing were her favourite activities. She was also known for her uplifting spirit, generosity, and commitment to her Catholic faith. She died at Winnipeg on 15 August 2004 and was buried in the Glen Eden Memorial Gardens.
