Memorable Manitobans: Duncan Daniel Stewart (1868-1940)

Businessman.

Born at Dunnich, Ontario in 1868, son of Rev. John Thomas Stewart and Mary Stewart, his childhood was spent at Kincardine. He came to Winnipeg in 1883 and, for several years, was associated with the dry goods businesses of R. J. Whitla and Company and Stobarts. Later, he partnered with brothers Dudley Dingle and George Dingle in the fruit and confectionary business of Dingle and Stewart. In latter years, he was connected with the Northland Coal Company.

On 30 January 1895, he married Alice Beatrice Dingle (1870-1956) at Oshawa, Ontario and they lived for a short time at Morden before returning to Winnipeg. They had two children: Lillian Grace Stewart (1898-1985, wife of William Arthur Congdon, daughter-in-law of Arthur Congdon) and John Archibald Stewart (1905-1972, husband of Dorothy Stewart). He was an active member of the 90th Winnipeg Rifles, retiring with the rank of Captain, and Westminster United Church, serving on its deacon's court and chairman of the music committee. He was a life member and past master of the AF & AM (Northern Light Lodge).

He died at the Misericordia Hospital on 17 August 1940 and was buried in the St. John's Cathedral Cemetery.
