Memorable Manitobans: Douglas Moncreiff Stanes (1917-2001)
MLA (1958-1959), MLA (1959-1962), MLA (1963-1966), MLA (1966-1969). Born on 28 February 1917, he was elected to the Manitoba Legislature for the St. James constituency at the 1958 general election, he was re-elected in 1959, 1962, and 1966. He was defeated by Alvin Mackling at the 1969 election. In 1947, he married Marian Bernice Beech (1913-1991, daughter of Thomas Westwood Beech and Ethel Lillian Beech) of Winnipeg in London, England, having met her in New York while she was working for Sir William Stephenson.
